OYAKAE...Student-Led/Student-Funded Social Business Project

Thanks to generous contributions, we were able to raise enough money to start an Oyakae Pilot Project in Nairobi, Kenya.

It is difficult for children to learn when they do not have access to good lighting. When electricity fails in informal Nairobi settlements like Dandora, kerosene lamps and candles are often the only option. The problem is, kerosene releases carbon and smoke that pollute the environment. Inhaling this smoke is detrimental to peoples’ health and the poor lighting is a strain on children’s eyes.

The Project: A student-led lighting project using D.Light solar-powered lights is underway. A group of students at Rosebella Preparatory Center in Kenya are pricing, marketing and selling these solar-powered lights to the surrounding informal settlements.

Student-Funded Enterprise: One of the major funders for the Rosebella D.light project was Davidson Elementary, who raised money by selling “Green” Light Bulbs and educating their community on ways to save energy at home.

Our Mission: to harness the potential of young people to succeed as adults tomorrow by enabling them to transform their own lives and communities today. Education can empower young people to become the change agents in their communities. We just have to listen to their ideas and equip them with tools to find and implement the solutions through social business.

Social Business Opportunity for 10,000 students worldwide

Generational Poverty

Give Now

In 2006, Dr. Muhammad Yunus won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in microfinance. As early as the 1970s, he and other social entrepreneurs proved that economically disadvantaged people could be creditworthy and small loans could help them build livelihoods through income-generating activities.

Microfinance certainly makes a significant difference, but it does not address generational poverty. The root… Continue
